How Algorithms Work
Bit of an algorithm multi-post, this one.
First up, @ianfitzpatrick linked this week to a fascinating piece revealing how the algorithms behind sites including Reddit, StumbleUpon really work to get the right mix of sources and signals.
Next, the NY Times makes the all important point about how algorithms can’t do it all alone: behind the curtain there is a decidedly retro helper — a human being.
Finally, whilst we’re on the subject, if by some fluke you haven’t seen Kevin Slavin’s excellent TED talk on ‘How Algorithms Shape Our World’, watch it now.
